Gear
On this page you can check out the various gear Aynsley uses… of course like most guitarists Aynsley is forever changing things around and trying different sounds, bits n pieces etc…..... so we will do our best to keep it up to date!!!. Included is as much detail as we think necessary (!)... anybody needing to know more info on number of pickup windings etc better ask someone who knows! Try the links.
Aynsley’s Gear
Guitars
Red Strat. Owned from new, this was Aynsley’s first proper electric. Dating from 1989, it’s been fitted with Lindy Fralin Pickups (Blues Specials), it has a maple ‘board with large frets, trem blocked… and a master tone. Other mods include a graphite nut and graphite saddles. Everything else on the guitar is original.
Sunburst Les Paul Std. This Epiphone was aquired in December 2003 used and in need of some repair work to the neck after it had been dropped. The pickups have been swapped for a Seymour Duncan ‘59 model at the neck and a Gibson 498T at the bridge. To improve tuning stability, the nut has been changed for a graphite one and the tuners swapped for Grovers.
Custom 335. Quite a talking point this one! This guitar has quite a lot of mystic about it made all the more interesting by no definate history as to its origins! It was bought around about 1997/98 from a shop in Newark, UK. Although nobody knows for definate, it is thought to have been hand built around 1978 but with no clue as to who built it! It is an exact replica of a late 50’s 335, the only difference being the unusual finish. It has an original set of PAF humbuckers and is wired stock apart from the pickups being out of phase with each other. Definately Aynsley’s most prized guitar and almost a star in its own right after being featured on ‘Guitarist Magazines cover DVD June 2005!!
Black Les Paul Std. Owned from new (1990), its pretty much stock apart from the neck pickup which has been swapped to a Lindy Fralin vintage model, a refret last year and the tuners replaced after the original ones fell to pieces. To cut down on string breakages, the saddles are graphite.
1950s F-Hole guitar. Used as a slide guitar, this was aquired around the same time as the 335 . Again a bit of a mystery guitar as the headstock has at some time been repainted and the tuners changed so not sure what make it is… several paople have said it could be an ‘Egmond’ but that s as much as we know. Fitted with an old Gibson P90 pickup in neck position.
All of Aynsley’s guitars are looked after by well respected luthier Bob Dayfield. He can be contacted on 01162 671028
Amps/Speakers
Marshall JMP 50W combo model 2144 (1978) Aquired in Switzerland around 1999. This is very similar to the more common model JMP 50W Master volume amp except this one also has built in reverb from the factory. As far as we know, Marshall only made this amp for about 18 months. It is cosmetically identical but with the extra dial on the control panel and also a built in 6db boost!
Fender Super 210 combo. Completely stock, this a 60 watt 2 X 10” amp from the early 90’s ‘red knob’ era.
Ampeg V2 head (c. 1973) Aynsley bought this earlier on in 2003 after discovering it by accident really. James was looking for an Ampeg Bass amp so one day on the road they wondered into a shop and saw it in amongst all the bass gear. Although it’s a guitar amp, it hadn’t been touched in a couple of years and when they suggested trying it, apparantly the guy in the shop sniggered and said “if you really want to, go ahead!” Well it was rigged up to a cab and as soon as Aynsley plugged in, the guy stopped sniggering and said “Jesus, that sounds amazing”. Unfortunately for him, he obviously hadn’t tried it before pricing it up. Bargain! Being a 70s model, it looks like a washing machine but sounds not unlike an old Fender amp with a lovely crunch and a real smooth compression when turned up. Unfortunately though, due to the insane decibel levels this amp is capable of, its not really used on stage.
Effects/Other
Aynsley’s basic setup when he plays with the band is a tuner, a Wah and a boost pedal.
Jim Dunlop ‘Crybaby’. Modified for true bypass
Boss ‘TU-2’ Stage Tuner, ‘GE-7’ Equaliser
T-REX ‘Alberta’ Very similar to a Tubescreamer but less harsh and a bit fuller sounding.
Peterson ‘Strobostomp
