Some other good Dylan covers by rock bands would be Like A Rollin’ Stone (The Rolling Stones), The Wicked Messenger (The Black Keys), Rainy Day Woman (The Black Crowes), Knocking On Heavens Door (G N R)
Not Dylan’s greatest fan by any stretch of imagination, but the Times Are Achanging could be classed as a signature song.

IndyScott - 09 August 2008 10:08 PM Got Evil Woman Blues and yes it’s quite good. Now just think of some others and let me know.
Do you know much of Free. All Right Now would be their signature tune, but their first album Ton Of Sobs is a classic. Paul Kossoff is particularly impressive on songs such as The Hunter (Albert King tune), Walking In My Shadow (which Joe Bonamassa covered), I’m A Mover, Sweet Tooth etc.

Wasn’t aware of Ton of Sobs, but will investigate. All Right Now was huge when it came out in the early 70’s - certfied Signature song fer sure. I’ve always loved it. Paul Kossoff was an excellant Blues/Rock guitarist that sadly succombed to drug addiction. Paul Rodgers is Rock’s all-time best singer IMO. Do you possess Ton of Sobs? How does it stack up to say John Mayall and Fleetwood Mac of that period?

Yes I have it. I bought the release with the extra songs, including a cover of BB King’s Waiting On You. I can recommend it as being as good (or almost as good) as the Mayalll and Mac recordings of that time. Free’s songs were less structured on their debut and therefore there is plenty space for Kossoff to stretch out on the songs. Special mention should also go to Andy Fraser, who played some great bass, and he was only 16 years old at the time (and he’d already played in Johh Mayall’s Bluesbreakers!). Try the songs I listed in the post above if you’re looking for a taste.

Some other good songs free did were The Stealer, Mr Big, Fire & Water, I’ll Be Creeping, Heartbreaker, Little Bit of Love and of course Wishing Well which Paul Rodgers wrote about Paul Kossoff. Their second biggest hit in the UK was actaully My Brother Jake.

Whitesnake’s signature tune would surely be Here I Go Again, it was their biggest hit both in the US and the UK.
I’d have selected Tattoo’d Lady as Rory’s signature tune. Its probably his most well known original song. Bullfrog Blues was a song he picked up after touring with Canned Heat and hearing their version. Speaking of which On the Road again would be Canned Heat’s signature tune.
The Paul Butterfield Blues Band is another band from that era that I’ve recently got into. Born In Chicago would probably. be their signature tune.

yeah - I was just sitting at work thinking of a few tunes - Tattoo’d Lady was a bit later than Bullfrog Blues, which was on the successful Live in Europe album and was probably the fans favourite track at the time (early 70’s) - re Whitesnake, I guess you are right, but Still of the Night is more of a killer riff rocker - depends what you like........

How big was Wishbone Ash in the U.K.? I don’t think they really got the attention they deserved here. Argus, imo, is one of the best albums of the 70’s. Jail Bait is definitely their best blues song, but my favorites of theirs are Blowin’ Free and Sometime World. Still great all these years later.

Is that title right for Bowie? I’m going to have to look into that. My fave for Dave is oddly (even for me) Lady Stardust. Love the simple melody and the words. The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is one of the best albums of any decade in my humble opinion. Bowie tried admirably but never quite bested that record.

Indy - Wishbone Ash are still great and still touring - I saw the Andy Powell band recently at The Astoria in London and Martin Turner, the original bassist also tours and we saw them at the infamous 100 Club in Oxford Street, London about 6 months ago - Blowin’ Free still sends shivers down the spine - also, check out GUGUN AND BLUES SHELTER on youtube and let me know what you think - great blues........
