Eldo you freakin’ did it again! Checked out your Little Wing suggestion and remembered already veiwing it with mild irritation over the poor sound on the vocals. You’re absolutely right about Simon’s talent - great guitarist, singer and song-writer. I’ve kept my eye on him since Duncan mentioned him awhile back. Found out he finally released his new album, Rich Man Falling Down yesterday a promptly bought it. There’s no Little Wing, but he does a SMOKIN’ cover of Jimi’s Power of Soul and another above-average cover of Free’s Be My Friend.
But this album isn’t about the covers - his own material is redhot! Highly recommend this one.

Yes, its a good version. I’ll be getting that album too. I contacted Simon through myspace and he said he is planning gigs for next year (including Scotland!).

Eldo, did you know that Simon McBride will showcase his debut album on a double bill with Matt Schofield (who unveils a new band) on Oct 28 at Dingwalls, Camden. Sounds like you should make yourself free for that one!

Another artist who does good cover versions is Chantel McGregor. I’d recommend you check out her on youtube too. She’s also better looking smile

Thanks for that tip - not seen Matt Schofield yet, but been wanting to catch one of his gigs - got three of his cds, so will try and make the Camden gig, followed on 1st November by Ian Parker at the Half Moon in Herne Hill, South London, followed by Billy Walton Band on 8th, also at the Half Moon - should be a good couple of weeks!!!

I’d really encourage you to go and see Matt. I’ve not seen him yet either but I will next month in Carlisle. The difference about the Campden gig though it that it is Matt’s new band which have recorded his new album. Johnny is still on keyboards, but he has got a bass player now, and another drummer. Original drummer Evan is increasingly busy with his own music, playing with the Neil Cowley Trio. This apparently is the only gig of the new four piece band until Spring next year. I’d be interested to read a review of the gig if you get the time. Britbabe’s right about staying on topic though, so you’d better put it in in the other artists section smile

I take your point about topics, but as there are only 4 of us posting regularly on here, (based on total member posts) -, it seems a bit harsh - also, I generally reply to messages picked up in my email, so it ain’t always easy..........

Hey Eldo, I certainly don’t mean for my comments to sound harsh and they not directed at anyone in particular. I like the fact that I have learned about so much good music from the other members of the forum. I was simply suggesting that if you were to do a live review (which I hope you would do), it would be best placed in the other artists section.

I’m keen to get more people contributing on the forum. I’m wondering if our discussions of other artists is encouraging or discouraging others to join in. Untimately though it is Aynsley’s forum, he should be the main focus of our conversations on here.
Have a good weekend! smile

I for one don’t care where a post is placed as long as it generates interest or debate. I just wish all the people visiting this site would join in more often.

I do agree with the latter statement certainly. Visitors and new joiners, if you’re looking for somewhere to start, please consider the how did you hear of Aynsley thread. smile

My comment was just a teasing remark, but it is the case that people are often put off joining in forums if topics are a bit ‘messy’ and it’s not so easy to pick out the strands you are most interested in because stuff gets a bit muddled.

I knew you were kidding, but you do make a valid point and future posters should try to stay in topic if possible.

Heard Aynsley’s version of Purple Rain the last time I saw him play, and boy is it good, hairs on the back of the neck etc. But my all time favourite cover is Joe Cocker doing With a Little Help from my Friends. The Who’s rendition of Shakin all Over and Summertime Blues from Live at Leeds take some beating for shear power. Will have to think about my other choice.

I’m always looking for good covers and found a couple recently: Sarah K, a Joni Mitchell type singer, did an excellent stripped-down cover of The Allman Brothers Whipping Post and Patti Smith did an entire album of covers with the gem being (imo) Everybody Wants to Rule the World. I ‘ve always liked Patti because she’s a true Artist and this album is far from being the lame karioke moneymaker it could’ve been. Worth checking out.

Oops… thats Sara K with no H. Been listening to both those songs alot since I posted yesterday and think Patti’s version of TFF’s song may be better and Sara’s effort would bring a smile to the Allmans. Good stuff!
