At first I thought Indigenous did the best cover of Redhouse, but after listening to Back Door Slam’s live version I can understand why Greenose is so ticked about them parking themselves in the States. I’ll even go so far to say even Britbabe could groove to this version.

Sadly I’ve not had a chance to hear their live version yet (I don’t have I-tunes). Interestingly enough this is what Joe Bonamassa said about BDS playing Red House:

“My only advice to them is pick another cover other than Red House!!!!  UGHHH Play the same music if you want, and do something like “Stone Crazy” from Buddy Guy.  Red House has been done to death.. By EVERYBODY!!!  I know the fans love it… But picking your covers is the key to setting yourself apart… I have heard Jimi (the original), Stevie Ray, Eric Johnson, Joe Satriani(Actually played it with him), Yngwie Malmstein, Indigenous (jammed with them on it too), Buddy Guy, Kenny Wayne, Steve Lukather, Wes Jeans, Eric Gales, and a plethera of other artist do that song at a miriad of blues fest.  That song is like a guitarist Default setting… Free advice from the “old Man”. You guys keep getting bigger and I ll have to charge you next time!!  Congrats BDS!! cant wait to finally meet you guys in Dallas… We’ll jam Just not on Red House Please!!!
Joe Bonamassa”

The date in Dallas he refers to is 26th September when BDS support Joe prior to both of them appearing at Austin City Limits.

I’d have to agree with Joe regarding the overkill with Redhouse, but a song well done, is just that, a song well done. I believe Davy Knowles could play Mary Had a Little Lamb and it would sound good. As far as choosing a different artist to cover, I’d look for new interpretations of old Masters like Muddy Waters, BB King or maybe Clapton. Clapton might be a good choice due to his popularity.

Going back to the Joe Bonamassa quote - it should be noted that Joe is an unbelievable interpretor of classic rock/blues songs. That, along with his unbelieveable guitar playing is what drew me to him in the first place. Back Door Slam should listen to his advice. As for going with a Clapton or better yet a Cream song - I have always loved the Cream’s Badge and think it would be a good choice for BDS to cover. Clapton’s version of Before You Accuse Me would be interesting to hear on electric guitar as well.

-Welcome back to the forum, Cliff! I know about 3/4 of the songs and would be cheating if I said more. Slowly but surely iTunes is getting more of Thunder’s music but I could use some more. Definitely the greatest rock band you never heard in the States.

Funny you mention Cream, Indy.  Aynsley and Ian Parker did a fantastic version of White Room at Ripley last year - but then, I’m not allowed to mention that cause you can’t hear it, right wink LOL.

Go ahead and tell the tale if you must. I can imagine Aynsley and Ian doing White Room would be memorable indeed. Is there a particular cover that AL does the most at his concerts? I know from other posts that When Doves Cry (thanks for the vid btw), Hush and Little Wing are played often. I recently watched Clapton’s Crossroads ‘07 concert and really liked the part with Eric and Steve Winwood doing the songs Can’t Find My Way Home and Dear Mr. Fantasy - guess that’s why I’m on an EC/Cream kick. Know he hasn’t done anything substantial in two decades, but he was definitely the man back in the day. Gotta go and check the damage around my house from the remnant of Hurricane Ike. Had sustained high winds and gusts that had to be 40 to 50mph for nearly 5 hours. The neighbors trampoline went through my privacy fence and nearly hit my house. I think my insurance company’s going to have to replace my roof - lost a bunch of shingles.

I actually had the first three Thunder albums (on cassette!), a good band. Not listened to them for a long time (due to them being cassette!). The only cover there I’m familar with is Gimme Some Lovin, which is a good version. They did a good version of Stone’s Gimme Shelter for a charity CD too. Can name most of the originals though :)
Another good cover of that era was Black Crowes’ Hard To Handle

Gosh Indy I’m glad you got away fairly lightly from Ike, tho I’m sure it doesn’t feel that way to you.  I looked at its path online the other night and was horrified to see it passed almost smack bang over EVERY one of my friends in the USA, bar one in New York.  I hope the rest are all ok too.

The Prince cover Aynsley does is Purple Rain, and ix nay on the id-vay - I’m very lucky it’s escaped detection so far, don’t want to get banned from Youtube, do I? LOL!! LOL  On the question of which is his most-oft played cover then leaving aside the solo gigs where most are covers if we’re being strict about things, I reckon ‘Hush’ is probably the longest running since he does it nearly every gig I’ve seen him at (you need the Blues Caravan DVD to see it, do you have it cause if not I’ll grab it for you next week).  Aynsley started doing ‘Hush’ when Paul Winter-Hart (Kula Shaker) was in the band and it goes down an absolute treat.

Sorry for the mistake for Purple Rain. I also can’t believe I used the word unbelieveable twice in practically the same sentence. My only excuse was it was early and I couldn’t sleep… or maybe what Duncan said is true in that I’m turning into a sixteen-year-old cause I’m on iTunes so often! LOL. I find it curious that he’d do any Prince songs - Purple Rain doesn’t seem to fit the image I have for him - yet his cover is well done.

Pretty much his reason for choosing it, according to our conversation when I asked him why.  All the more power to him for that, say I. cool smile

You’re not alone, I’d thought that too. Seems like Prince does not like his covers on youtube. I’m interested to read about Hush. I know the Deep Purple versions, and Kula Shakers too (blush). I think I’d enjoy hearing Aynsley’s version! Hard to imagine it with no organ/keyboards though!

PS Indy, don’t spend all night sitting at the computer when you have school in the morning! lol smile smile

This is how it happens: Yesterday, Eldo calls me out about my statement that Aynsley did the best version of Little Wing. Never mind that I said it’s just MY favorite version… Anyway one thing led to another and I find myself re-listening to both A.L.’s and Stevie’s versions. Both songs are great! The next thing I know I’m checking my iPod library to see how many versions I possess of Jimi’s song (8, soon to be 9)and then go to iTunes to see how many people have covered this song, whereupon I discover that someone I knew about a year ago, but blew off, does a unique acoustic version of the song. The bad news (I thought) to this story is I had to buy the whole album to get this one song. Trust me it was 10 dollars well spent. Later, just outta curiosity, I wander over to Youtube to see this guy do a jaw dropping cover of Hall & Oates’ Sara Smile. Apparently Darryl Hall was so impressed he asked the Guitarist to preform the song with him at some benifit H & O’s was sponsoring. And if I thought that was the highlight, the next vid I saw may be one of the best things I’ve ever seen on Youtube - Monte Montgomery preforming a 10:06 minute jam of Little Wing! You’ve got to see it to believe it.
