No, I haven’t. Its something I always wanted to get sometime, but I think its kind of hard to find here, unless you buy it on ebay from the US.
There’s a free MP3 from their new album available on their website:
I’ve just replaced my copy of Indigenous’ ‘Live At Pachyderm Studios’ which mysteriously broke itself in the case with no help whatever from my children. Apparently. I would also recommend http://www.caiman.com , I usually end up getting a lot of my stuff there, they’re often the cheapest sellers on Amazon and they’re good on delivery. I even buy my Nimmo Brothers cds from them, which Stevie thankfully seemed to be amused by! It makes me laugh when they arrive with an ‘imported from the UK’ sticker on
Talking of Indigenous .... I have just got their/his new album (Broken Lands) through the post this morning and bloomin good it is too .... I haven’t been able to blast it out loud yet, but no doubt i’m sure I’ll manage to do that over the w/end.
The North Mississippi Allstars are a favourite of mine. They kind of play Hill Country music in the style of Junior Kimbrough and R.L. Burnside with a little hendrix thrown in, and even a little hip hop. Their first album, Shake Hands With Shorty released in 2000 is the best, but I’d also recommend three of the four other albums they did (Polaris is the poor one).
Eldo - Thanks for mentioning Indigenous. Britbabe urged me to look into them a long time ago but at the time I could find very little of their music to sample. Looked them up this weekend and it was all there and I can now see why everyone’s so high on this group. I’m still cherry-picking their music and have found a number of gems like Should I Stay (my favorite song from their latest album Broken Lands),Things We Do,Out of Nowhere,Fool Me Again and Make a Change. I’m probably going to get the entire live album that Brit loves cause what I’ve heard sounds pretty awesome. I think they’re playing near my home next month, if anyone’s seen them live I’d like to hear about it.
The mention of the North Mississippi All-Stars jarred my memory of their unique style of music. Brothers Dickinson (Luther and Cody) pay tribute to all the southern greats, especially R.L.Burnside. BTW Luther is now a member of The Black Crowes. Thinking of NMAS reminded of another southern blues/rock band, Gov’t Mule. Warren Haynes is the man in GM who also moonlights in another group with Greg Allman and Derek Trucks.

It must be great to play in not one but two great bands!
I’d love to see the NMA’s live, they are meant to be superb. They two shows one in London and one in Dublin several years ago, but being in Scotland I did not make it to either (but I did check for a lastminute Ryanair deal).
The live album Hill Country Review is a good starting place too R.L Burnside and some of his family appear on it, as done Chris Robinson from Black Crowes. Keepin On Marchin is there more recenly live album.
Count me in for a Mule/NMA UK tour!
I’d go to that concert myself! NMAS is a great band live. There’s a vid on Youtube with both Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks on slide acoustic guitars playing one of WH’s great songs, Old Friend. Worth a look.
Other blues I’ve been listening to but not previously mentioned:
Kirk Fletcher - Shades of Blue—Albert Collins reincarnate! Probably the best of this group.
Jimmy Burns - Leaving Here Walking—Good blues ala Robert Cray.
Robert Balfour - Pushin’ My Luck—Great “Hill Country” picker.
Jimmy Hall - Rendevous With the Blues—Great Harp/sax player formerly of Wet Willie.
Philip Sayce - Peace Machine—More rock than blues, but an interesting musician. Does a great cover of Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl.
Simon McBride sounds very good. Will investigate further. I will do the same for Vulnerable Things. Which songs would you recommend? The Myspace samples are all pretty good but I’m sure they’re others.
