Transatlantic’s cover of Procol Harum’s ‘In Held (‘Twas In I)’ from their first album ‘SMPTe’ and Got Milk’s cover of Jamiroquai’s Deeper Underground.

That’s an interesting post - how did you discover that one (Procol Harem that is)?

BB

Somehow I didn’t imagine it would be the Jamiroquai cover LOL I’m not a exactly a fan of his, it’s just that the cover makes it into a nice funk number thats more to my taste. As for Transatlantic, well they are a prog-rock supergroup featuring members of Dream Theater, Marillion, Spock’s Beard and the Flower Kings so it was inevitable that i’d buy their albums one day as those are all bands I like. It was the first one that I brought and already being a fan of Procol Harum I found it quite an interesting arrangement by doing things like taking spoken passages and turning them into sung ones.

Thanks

Jamiro who?

Alex,
I thought I had some of Jamiroquai’s music, but apparently not.  I listened to their version of “Deeper Underground” and like it.  They’ve got quite a few other songs that I’m going to pick up.  Found nothing of Got Milk nor Procol Harum’s “In Held”.  The 30 second sample of Transatlantic’s cover didn’t tell me much and at seventeen minutes would stretch my attention span.

You wouldn’t find Got Milk easily, it’s a cover band offshoot from people in Storm Engine doing pub gigs, they just happen to have recorded some of their stuff and put it on myspace for fun. Their cover of Golden Brown using the Chapman Stick (12 string bass) is interesting too. They are friends of the band and record some great original stuf in their varoious projects. The bass player’s solo material is worth a look at http://www.myspace.com/sirenbass. I know he played bass for Danni Wilde at some point so some may have seen him before.

In Held cover is on youtube here:
Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zYHCDMF_TfE
Part 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9kJMvkmAXY

But yes, like the original it is just under 20 minutes long. Still that’s prog for you. It’s still a damn sight shorter than their most recent offering which although being split into 12 tracks is one 77 minute piece of music.

I don’t know about “best” cover version, but strangest for me has to be Trust In Me by Siouxsie & The Banshees (Through The Looking Glass album). The Church also do some interesting cover on their Box of Birds album.

Keeping with the ladies, can I introduce you to Diamanda Galas? If you don’t know her, think Bloody Terrifying Spice. When she’s in a “playful” mood and not drenching herself half naked in blood or looking psychotic in a pink coctail dress with John Paul Jones, she’ll do blues and spiritual covers, except when she does “I’ll put a spell on you”, she sings it like she means it..all thoughts of Bette Midler go out the window, fast. If you’re not of a nervous disposition, check out these albums:- The Singer, The Sporting Life, You Must Be Certain of The Devil. Any further exploration, you do at your own risk.

My partner came across a bit of a strange crossover cover the other day, Josh Rouse (he of the “alt. country” scene, whatever that is) covering The Cure’s “A Forest”; and not doing a half bad job of it either. Check “The Legendary Horseshoe Tavern Toronto, ONT July 11, 2002”

Sorry if I seem to have a “Cure” thing going on at the moment, I’ll try to snap out of it.
