On Saturday I went to check out the W T Feaster band, from Indiana USA, after discovering they were playing in Blaydon. I was surprised at the turnout before I even got in the venue, obviously they’ve garnered many fans in their couple of weeks playing up here and after hearing them, it’s easy to see why. I really enjoyed the gig, despite the 3 Hendrix covers lol
. Although the material wasn’t particularly challenging and fit nicely within the snug blues formula that most blues club regulars seem to prefer, there’s a huge charm about the band and they aren’t flashy in any way, they let their skill and the music speak for themselves. Travis Feaster is an excellent guitarist who, like our Aynsley, knows the value of restraint and he has a great voice which reminds me strongly of my much-beloved Anthony Gomes and indeed quite a bit of their material had that same funky edge that I like so much about him. There was, as should be the case in my opinion, a great deal more guitar in the live performance than there is on the album, which as my friend Indy pointed out does have a flavour of Los Lonely Boys about it. I didn’t hear that so much at the gig, seeing them live brought Indigenous more to mind. I wish I’d had the chance to see a couple more of their gigs while they were here.
The only sour note of the evening was that unfortunately the people who had had the foresight to bring them over to England to play got entirely carried away by their enthusiasm and totally took over the place, and they really ticked me off by constantly taking flash photos into the crowd which ended up giving me a severe headache as I was near the front and standing, where most were sitting. I mean, how many shots of a hundred people in a small dark room does anyone need? I give them huge kudos for getting the band over here but they really need to display better manners towards the venues and promoters who provide them than that or they run the risk of not being re-booked.
