There is a poll and competition in UK magazine, Blues Matters which may be of interest to you. No Aynsley albums of course this year, but there has still been some good releases:

or send to the usual PO Box address by 5th January 2008.

Blues Matters have a pretty open mind when it comes to their reviews so even if you don’t have the back issues, if something has been released this year, I’d be tempted to include it. Everything between Whitesnake and Duffy (neither of which I’d consider blues) have been reviewed this year.

Some of the ones you may wish to consider would include releases by Sonny Landreth, Walter Trout, Sean Costello, Oli Brown, Ian Siegal, Seasick Steve, Gary Moore, Buddy Guy, The Black Keys, Dani Wilde and live releases by Ian Parker, John Mayer and Joe Bonamassa,

I thought it might be interesting if we could discuss here which ones we would chose.

I am a big fan of The Hoax. Too bad they are no longer together. They are : Jon Amor & Jesse Davey on lead guitars, Hugh Coltman on vocals and harmonica, Robin Davey on bass and Mark Burnett on drums. One of the best live blues bands I have ever heard. If you like Aynsley, Ian Parker, Joe Bomamassa, or KWS you will love these guys. All of the CD’s are worth having. Humdinger is the best studio and Live Forver is th only live CD commerically release except for some MP3’s that are no longer available. The Hoax live performances are killer.

IAN PARKER BAND - LIVE AT THE BEAVERWOOD CLUB, CHISLEHURST 20/11/08

Aynsley’s old buddy and Blues Caravan member, Ian Parker, is playing the Beaverwood Club in Chislehurst, Kent (South London) on thursday 20th November 2008. Ian returns to promote his latest ‘Official Bootleg’ album released 1st April 2008.
Guitar hero? Consummate show man? Electrifying live performer? Ian Parker is all these things, but let’s face it, it’s the song that really counts.
Ian offers something for everyone -rock, blues, roots, soul, gospel, funk are all to be found in the musical melting pot of a man fast becoming Britain’s best-loved blues / roots performer.
He is a genuinely literate songwriter, a young artist rooted in the Blues but not trapped in them. Guitar lovers need not fret, there’s plenty to satisfy even the most demanding axe-head; but what lingers are the songs which get in your head and stubbornly refuse to leave, much like many an audience after a Parker gig.

A truly distinctive voice and an inspirational guitar technique in one performer is a rare combination, and together with a cracking band, and a brand new album, Ian Parker is all that is good about contemporary, guitar driven music.
Why not come along and help keep music live - more details on http://www.feenstra.co.uk

W T Feaster Band

On Saturday I went to check out the W T Feaster band, from Indiana USA, after discovering they were playing in Blaydon. I was surprised at the turnout before I even got in the venue, obviously they’ve garnered many fans in their couple of weeks playing up here and after hearing them, it’s easy to see why. I really enjoyed the gig, despite the 3 Hendrix covers lol . Although the material wasn’t particularly challenging and fit nicely within the snug blues formula that most blues club regulars seem to prefer, there’s a huge charm about the band and they aren’t flashy in any way, they let their skill and the music speak for themselves. Travis Feaster is an excellent guitarist who, like our Aynsley, knows the value of restraint and he has a great voice which reminds me strongly of my much-beloved Anthony Gomes and indeed quite a bit of their material had that same funky edge that I like so much about him. There was, as should be the case in my opinion, a great deal more guitar in the live performance than there is on the album, which as my friend Indy pointed out does have a flavour of Los Lonely Boys about it. I didn’t hear that so much at the gig, seeing them live brought Indigenous more to mind. I wish I’d had the chance to see a couple more of their gigs while they were here.

The only sour note of the evening was that unfortunately the people who had had the foresight to bring them over to England to play got entirely carried away by their enthusiasm and totally took over the place, and they really ticked me off by constantly taking flash photos into the crowd which ended up giving me a severe headache as I was near the front and standing, where most were sitting. I mean, how many shots of a hundred people in a small dark room does anyone need? I give them huge kudos for getting the band over here but they really need to display better manners towards the venues and promoters who provide them than that or they run the risk of not being re-booked.

And then I heard this “kid” playing a guitar everyway possible and it slapped me back into the world of the hopeful! He’s across the pond soon. If you haven’t seen him, catch a show..AMAZING..great voice, band, all are great guys!!!

DAVID GOGO BAND - LIVE IN PURLEY 12/11/08

Thanks to this forum, I was advised to go and check out the David Gogo Band last night, playing at a small pub venue in Purley, South London. From the off, there’s one thing for sure - the David Gogo Band sure know how to rock. The opening number of his 18 track set was “Soul Fever”, a swampy riffing blues shuffle, not unlike Disorderly Me, which got us off to a great start. David, looking very cool in his smart texas style suit and tie then aired She’s Alright, from his recent Vibe album. The album version featured the late Jeff Healey. A couple of tracks on and we were deliverred a rousing Dust My Broom, followed by 300 Pound Shoes. Dave sure is a great guitarist and loves showing off his slide prowess, beer bottles and whiskey glasses included. We were lapping it up. Love in The City, very Stones’ish was another belter. Having not seen or heard David before the gig, it’s difficult to remember many of the tracks, but Hoochie Coochie Man, Shake your Money Maker along with a SRV style medley of old faves was a corker and all stood out for me. The finale of Highway 61 brought the gig to a close, just before midnight. David said he hadn’t played in the UK before this current “awareness” tour, but will be back next year for a fuller tour - go see him if you get the chance - and check out his website - you won’t be disappointed!!!
